Civil society and inclusive COVID-19 data

We are pleased to be part of a UN High-level Political Forum side event on Tuesday, 13 July focused on “An Unequal Pandemic: Bringing Communities’ and Civil Society Organisations’ Evidence to the Forefront.” The event will launch a civil society collaborative report over Inclusive COVID-19 Data. 

CBM Global provided feedback and research findings into the report and supports two organisations of persons with disabilities (OPD) partners who are presenting: Dr. Mohammed Ali Loutfy and Sulayman Abdulmumuni Ujah on behalf of the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities (SGPwD). Specifically, the report includes findings from the SGPwD COVID-19 research. This includes two phases of qualitative research to learn about the experiences of persons with disabilities in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The first phase of research took place in 2020 with disability movement leaders from around the world and the second phase followed in 2021 exploring three countries in-depth: Bangladesh, Bolivia, and Nigeria. Findings from the World Blind Union study that we supported: COVID-19, Amplifying Voices: Our Lives, Our Say are also included. 

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened inequalities and eroded hard-won progress against poverty. Globally, official COVID-19 responses have often overlooked or disproportionately affected marginalised groups, in part because of the scarcity of official data that accurately counts or reflects their lives. 

Communities and civil society organizations (CSOs) have been at the heart of local COVID-19 responses, generating data that could help to address the pervasive gaps in official statistics and data. The Civil Society Collaborative on Inclusive COVID-19 Data, which brings together 20 CSOs alongside communities, has developed an important new report that uncovers the unequal effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and community responses and charts the pathway to an inclusive recovery. The report demonstrates the power of data generated by communities and CSOs to increase the visibility of people and groups overlooked by official data and improve understanding of their situation and coping strategies. 

A diverse and growing range of CSOs are engaged as partners, including CBM Global and many others. The collaborative builds on the existing work of the International Civil Society Centre’s Leave No One Behind (LNOB) Partnership and the Global Partnership’s Inclusive Data Charter (IDC) and Citizen-Generated Data (CGD) Task Team. CBM Global is an active member of both the LNOB Partnership and the Inclusive Data Charter.
