CRS Philippines

Project | March 19, 2025

IAG has appreciated the opportunity to work with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in the Philippines to examine Disability Inclusion in some of their flagship Urban Disaster Risk Reduction Projects

CRS commissioned us to examine two of their Disaster Risk Reduction projects in Metro Manila, Bulacan, and Rizal Provinces: SUCCESS – focused on preparedness against flooding; and SHAKE- focused on household awareness level of awareness and knowledge on earthquakes. We sought to understand how their disability inclusion efforts have aligned with best practice, generate evidence of what works, and make recommendations to strengthen disability inclusion in DRR programming. We also worked with local disability movement partners to train CRS Philippines staff and partner on disability inclusive DRR programming.

We drew from our experience developing the “Pacific Disaster Ready: Disability Inclusion Tip Sheets” to frame the research. The study revealed that many positive strides in disability inclusion awareness and practice were observed. It also highlighted opportunities to strengthen inclusive communication, community involvement of persons with disabilities in DRR, and engagement in DRR governance and decision-making processes.

Consistent with their commitment to disability inclusion, over 90 regional CRS staff joined dissemination webinars. We continue to explore ways to work together to promote and practice disability inclusive DRR with our CRS colleagues.
