Climate Justice Communities – Rwanda
Project | March 19, 2025
Our CBM UK Inclusion Advisory Group team is excited to be a partner in the Climate Just Communities (CJC) Rwanda consortium. CJC is a Scottish Government funded programme implementing inclusive climate related livelihood programmes (2023-2026).
In Rwanda, we are working with Scottish Catholic International Aid Foundation (SCIAF), Trocaire, local Rwandan organisations and leaders, Government officials, and Rwandan business and service providers such as finance institutions and local builders.
As consortium members, we contribute to the governance, management and implementation of the programme, and support disability inclusion across all the project activities.
Project activities address three pillars of climate justice:
- Procedural Justice – activities aimed at (a) improving learning and advocacy at national/regional and global level and (b) enhancing collaboration between delivery partners, officials and communities.
- Distributive Justice – activities aimed at (a) reducing soil degradation and (b) increasing community resilience to climate hazards, including establishing progressive terraces, community nurseries and kitchen gardens, retrofitting houses, afforestation, and provision of energy saving cookstoves.
- Transformative Justice – activities aimed at (a) reducing poverty and (b) increasing community resilience to climate shocks, including creation and strengthening of inclusive Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) groups, increasing access to green finance, and linking farmers with sustainable markets.
We are proud to be working with our disability movement partner National Union of Disabled People’s Organisations Rwanda (NUDOR), to strengthen disability inclusion advice across these activities. Together, we are:
- Providing training at all levels of the project, including with consortium partners, government officials, service providers and VSLA leaders
- Providing technical assistance including accessibility audits and related modifications,
- Supporting access to assistive devices for participants with disabilities
- Providing leadership training and support to people with disabilities.
