Comprehensive child eye health in Nigeria
This report explores the long-term impact of the Comprehensive Child Eye Health in Nigeria (CCEHiN) project, implemented by CBM UK between 2017 and 2020 under the global Seeing is Believing initiative. Funded by Standard Chartered, the project reached over 52 million people across 11 Nigerian states, delivering eye health services to children through screenings, surgeries, spectacles, low vision devices, and inclusive education. Four years on, this review assesses the sustainability of outcomes in government systems, schools, health facilities, and partner organisations. It highlights enduring successes, such as continued referral pathways, trained personnel, and policy integration, while also identifying challenges like resource gaps and workforce shortages. The findings offer valuable lessons for future inclusive eye health programming.
Sustaining Inclusive Vision Centres in India
The document explores the success and sustainability of the Inclusive Vision Centres (IVCs) project in India. Funded by CBM UK, the project supported Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital to transition from its traditional eye camps to provide accessible and affordable eye care at the community level. The review highlights the project's emphasis on community engagement, training local women as ophthalmic paramedics, and using tele-consultation technology to enhance service delivery. The IVC model's success is evident in its expansion to nearly 200 centres (now supported by CBM India), demonstrating significant impact and growth in providing quality eye care services.
Evidence summary: Disability Data and Eye Health
In 2023, The Fred Hollows Foundation (The Foundation) engaged CBM Global's Inclusion Advisory Group (IAG) to gather evidence and provide practical recommendations on collecting and using disability data within eye health programs. Although there were well-established tools and guidance on disability data within population surveys and development programs, clear guidance on their application and rollout in the eye health sector was unavailable.
