CBM Global celebrates 1st year of Global Greengrants Fund Disability Rights & Climate Justice Board

CBM Global is honoured to be part of the Disability Rights and Climate Justice (DRCJ) Advisory Board of the Global Greengrants Fund – an initiative that stands at the crossroads of two pressing global issues—disability rights and climate justice. Global Greengrants Fund is been one of the leading organizations in the world supporting grassroots-led efforts to protect the planet and the rights of people. CBM Global, the International Disability Alliance and the Disability Rights Fund are members of the board, working alongside its coordinator. The Board’s work along with grant making to organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) is focused on connecting with policy officials, experts and the climate movement for powerful collaboration on disability and climate.

The Advisory Board recently celebrated its first full year of grant-making with grants of over $300k USD to 31 OPDs in Sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia, the Pacific Islands, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Europe. The grantees included; OPDs working to support women with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples with disabilities and young people with disabilities. CBM Global Philippines OPD partner Life Haven Center for Independent Living received a grant to conduct participatory and consultative research about the impacts of climate change on people with disabilities in the Eastern Visayas region. The research will support the organization and other organizations of people with disabilities it partners with to better support and advocate for people with disabilities in the context of climate impacts on the region.

The DRCJ model of funding is innovative in how it supports OPDs who for a range of reasons cannot access funds for their climate action and environmental work. Focusing its funding to OPDs at the frontline of the climate crisis will have an important impact for the communities who are affected.”

“Effective advocacy on climate justice needs a good evidence base so that policy-makers can work with communities to effect change. Having access to small grants for conducting action research, capacity building and organising campaigns strengthens collective advocacy on climate justice. The different grants given in 2023 will support a range of OPDs to engage in climate action at community and national levels.”
