OPDs and disability activists leading the way on climate justice

News | August 19, 2024

CBM Global celebrates its second year of membership of the Global GreenGrants Disability Rights and Climate Justice Advisory Board. The Advisory board was born out of a vision for a world where the voices of people with disabilities are not only recognised but also integrated into climate action strategies and builds on Global GreenGrants work in the area of disability and climate justice.

Mary Keogh, Advocacy Director of CBM Global, says:

“The board is a grant making board and over the two years we have been involved, $900,000 in small grants have gone to disability activists and grassroots organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs). Climate Justice is one of CBM Global’s advocacy priorities and our roadmap launched in 2023 commits to working to bridge the disconnect between disability rights and climate justice.”

CBM Global Philippines launched the CBM Global Federation Climate Advocacy Roadmap in Manila in November 2023. Hercules Paradiang, Country Director, states that:

“The Philippines is a country on the front-line of the climate crisis. Working with communities and grassroots organisations is important to mitigate some of the impacts, but policy change and governments living up to their commitments are the most critical need. We were pleased to have one of our OPD partners receive a grant from Global GreenGrants in 2023 and now again in 2024.”

Karla Henson of Life Haven says:

“Life Haven recognises persons with disabilities as experts not only in identifying the barriers they face but also in finding solutions to these challenges. With the support of the Global Greengrants Fund, our commitment to ensuring voices of persons with disabilities lead the way in climate justice is strengthened. By equipping our community with the tools to advocate for their rights and drive climate action, we help shape policies and practices that reflect true inclusion and create a sustainable future for all.”

Global Greengrants Fund has been one of the leading organizations in the world supporting grassroots-led efforts to protect the planet and the rights of people.

Life Haven Center for Independent Living, a non-profit organization of persons with disabilities, located in Valenzuela City, Philippines, serves as a pillar of support for persons with disabilities.
